CRUEL WAR (Franklin 622 - 1969) (White Whale WW295 - 1969)

* Note: The label incorrectly attributed the song to "Public Domain".

No previous release by Franklin Records had ever sold more than the original 1,000 copies ordered by Frank Wiener. Frank didn't consider himself a "real" record company - he used the records to stimulate bookings!!

Cruel War sold 23,000 copies on the Franklin label, contributing to the largest domestic sales year experienced to date by London Records, the company who pressed the disk for Franklin.

The record was licensed to White Whale Records in the United States (the Turtles label) and promotion copies were distributed. The prestigious Drake-format Top 40 radios stations had already scheduled the record for play nation-wide when White Whale was contacted by an angry Peter Yarrow who had not been properly listed on the label. A threatened lawsuit caused White Whale to drop the record and it never went into rotation. @#$%

So near and yet so far!
