Born
in Forth Worth, Texas on December 2, 1931,
Roy Petty received his Bachelor of Arts
degree from Dillard University in New
Orleans, and his Master of Arts (Music)
from Fisk University in Nashville,
Tennessee. Upon discharge from the
US military, he was employed by the
Chicago public school system as a music
teacher and made occasional appearances on
the Chicago club circuit. Relocating
to Winnipeg in 1962, he became a frequent
entertainer at Chan's Moon Room.
Petty hosted the CBC weekly television
production, The Roy Petty Show, a 15
minute variety show that aired Wednesday
evenings from May 8 to June 27, 1965 and
Saturday evenings from November 3 to
December 29, 1965. Produced in
Winnipeg, the program featured Roy Petty
with the Bobby Jackson Quartet and Lenny
Breau on guitar.
A 45 RPM EP, titled Songs I Love To
Sing, was released with Breau
accompanying Petty.
Roy Petty's accomplishments include the Ed
Sullivan Show as well as multiple stage
appearances in productions such as
Carousel, Porgy and Bess, The Little
Foxes, and Show Boat. He performed
on the night club circuit in the US, as
well as Europe and Japan.
Often referred to as the Big Man with the
Big Voice, Roy Petty passed away in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada at the age of
74 on December 8, 2005.
