John’s place in Manitoba Music
History is excellently documented in
Sharry Wilson’s lovingly and exhaustively
researched book ‘Young Neil: The Sugar
Mountain Years’. John sang vocals in The
Classics and Stubby Six in those early
years in River Heights with Neil Young,
Jack Gowenlock, and Ken Koblun, among
others.
His older brother (my Dad) Bill Copsey was
a figure in the 50’s Winnipeg rock n roll
scene as a member of the Playboys and Wild
Bill Copsey and the Rhythm Rockers, and
with folk trio The Roamers.
John was also close friends with Chad
Allan and I believe they recorded some
unreleased music together.
John performed on Rainbow Stage and as a
solo entertainer in a number of Winnipeg
music venues in the early 1970s. In
addition to his musical talents, John
attended Fine Arts at the University of
Manitoba and was a gifted painter,
sketcher and sculpter [sic].
He is remembered fondly by many, as I can
attest by the number of friends and
associates who have reached out to his
namesake nephew over the years. He greatly
influenced me with his love of art and
music and architecture. A truly wonderful
and gifted man. He will be remembered
fondly and missed dearly.
