Interesting anecdote regarding
George De Moisac ...
In June 1966, after Chad Allan quit the
Guess Who, the band members thought they
had a musical hole to fill. Chad
played rhythm guitar so the band went in
search of a rhythm guitarist. The
first person they contacted was George
DeMoisac from The Dawgs (later in
Footloose and Fancy Free [sic], photo
above). Randy called George's house
but no one answered. After a couple
more tries, he gave up. So the band
turned to the second name on their
shortlist, Deverons rhythm guitarist Bruce
Decker, who had worked closely with
Burton. Burton called, Bruce
answered and accepted the invitation to
join the Guess Who. Although his
tenure was a mere three months, Decker was
an official member of the band.
It wasn't until my biography of the band,
"American Woman: The Story of The Guess
Who" came out in 1995, 29 years later,
that George DeMoisac discovered that he
had been shortlisted for the Guess Who and
missed the call that might have changed
his life. He was gobsmacked.
George did okay, though, becoming a
longstanding Crown prosecutor in Manitoba.
If only answering machines had been
invented in 1966.
